How to Achieve a Good Divorce

It’s day two of Resolution’s Good Divorce Week 2020.

So, what is a “good” divorce? How do you divorce well and what steps can you take to achieve a constructive divorce?

Two of our lawyers, director James Pirrie and associate Nicole Phillips, have recently written about their top tips for a good divorce.

James’ blog “How to Divorce Well” include his top tips:

  • Divorce reasonably;
  • Focus on what matters and avoid pointing the finger;
  • Disclose information fully and early;
  • Focus first on the children;
  • Get on with it;
  • Get help to manage how infuriating this all is.

In Nicole’s blog “How to achieve a constructive divorce” she identifies the common features of the approach shared by couples who go on to achieve a constructive divorce. In Nicole’s view these common features include:

  • Recognising that relationship breakdown has emotional as well as legal repercussions, and that it is vital to attend to both;
  • Thinking carefully about which lawyer to instruct;
  • Focusing on the bigger picture and the welfare of your children.

You can find both blogs and much more on our News and Blogs page here.

A further feature of a good divorce is successful communication. The quality of the communication between a couple is key. In the podcast below, FLiP associate Nicole Phillips discusses the importance of successful communication in achieving a good divorce with Gillian Bishop, one of the founders of FLiP, and Dr Emma Loveridge, the founder of Rafan House (a clinically-governed psychotherapeutic clinic).
