Family Law in Partnership director Daniel Coombes was a panellist at last night’s National Debate: A Question of Consent hosted by The National Theatre. The debate examined the issue of consent in relationships and complemented the new play Consent by Nina Raine, directed by Roger Michell currently playing at The National. Daniel’s fellow panellists were Baroness Helena Kennedy QC and Catherine Dunn, an independent sexual violence adviser, and the panel was chaired by Rachel Cooke, the award winning journalist.

A Question of Consent is part of a new series of panel discussions led by The National Theatre, responding to issues raised by the current season of plays and affecting the nation as a whole. Previous events in the National Debate series have included a debate on the EU referendum with Lords Kinnock and Lawson, a debate on nationhood and identity chaired by The Economist’s Anne McElvoy and a debate on the language of death chaired by Radio 4’s Nick Robinson.

Daniel Coombes commented: “I am delighted to have been asked to join the panel to debate “A Question of Consent”, an issue with profound consequences for family relationships.” Daniel and fellow director Helen Greenfield were previously consulted by Nina Raine, Roger Michell and the actors appearing in Consent as part of their preparations to explore the issues of consent raised by the play.
