“WHEN HARRY LEFT SALLY”: A WORKSHOP ON GREY DIVORCE

The latest statistics show that divorce among couples in their 50s, 60s and beyond continues to rise. Complex financial, emotional and legal challenges often occur when unravelling these long term marriages or relationships. As divorce professionals our goal is to ensure clients transition from their marriages or relationships to their separate lives with both the resources to which they are entitled and the resources they need. What happens to them after that is part of what makes this area of practice different as well as challenging.

This workshop will present a case study that follows a couple divorcing in their 60’s through to their remarriages. Studies in the US show that 80% of grey divorcees date after divorce and a third of those remarry. The workshop will examine capacity issues, adult children and their concerns for the financial wellbeing of their re-partnering parents, three generation families blending, care and support of parents and their new elderly partners and, of course, how we as family dispute resolution experts can provide emotional, legal and financial support.

Ruth Smallacombe of Family Law in Partnership and Marion Korn of Mutual Solutions will present the workshop.
