Family Law Q&A: Mediation
Family Mediation at FLiP
What is family mediation?
Family mediation is a Non-Court Dispute Resolution (NCDR) process. Mediation offers a flexible, confidential and cost-effective alternative to the court for resolving family law disputes.
Almost any family law dispute can be dealt with in mediation, for example, dealing with financial and housing arrangements on separation and divorce, issues concerning children such as where they will live, how often they will see each parent and their education and disputes between cohabitants. Mediation allows people to stay in control by choosing their mediator and making their own decisions, which usually leads to more lasting agreements.
Mediation can cover all family issues ranging from divorce and separation (including finance and housing matters) to children matters (including where your child might live and contact issues, international relocation of children and schooling). At FLiP, we also offer mediation in relation to pre- and post-nuptial agreements, civil partnership and cohabitation agreements.
The process encourages open and constructive discussion, prioritises children’s welfare, can occur at any stage of a dispute, and provides privacy and discretion.
What sets FLiP’s mediation services apart?
Our mediators are among the most experienced in the country who combine exceptional legal knowledge with care and compassion to deliver constructive solutions in partnership with you. Some of our family mediators have a therapeutic background and others have a legal background but all offer mediation services of the very highest quality.
Our mediators cover all family issues in relation to both domestic and cross border family disputes. Some of our mediators are also qualified to offer child inclusive mediation, whilst others offer hybrid mediation services. We can also offer support in other languages should you need this. Our mediation meetings can take place in person and/or online, whichever you prefer.
Is mediation suitable for people with diverse needs?
In our experience, mediation can be more effective than other processes as there is a level of flexibility that means it can be tailored to individual needs. At FLiP we are dedicated to making mediation as accessible as possible and support participants to identify and agree adjustments that might make the process better for them.
Our mediators are skilled at supporting neurodiverse individuals and have experience of mediation where one or more participants is ADHD, ASC or ASD. They have the tools to support dyscalculia, dysgraphia and dyslexia in mediation.
Our office is fully accessible to those with physical disabilities and we offer online mediation for those who are unable, or prefer not, to travel.
Who do I contact to engage with FLiP’s mediation services?
Wendy Hoare, our mediation coordinator, will be your first point of contact if you call or email enquiring about mediation at FLiP. Wendy fully appreciates that picking up the telephone to make that first call to enquire about mediation or sending that first email is a big step for anyone embarking on a process which they have, usually, never done before.
We offer flexible mediation options, including in-person (shuttle mediation is an option for couples that are not comfortable being in the same room) and remote sessions, to accommodate our clients’ preferences and circumstances.
